FAQ’s
Seed starting and propagation trays are well worth the investment. Having more control over your growing conditions encourages higher germination rates, healthier seedlings and makes organising your seeds a breeze. Plus, starting seeds at home tends to be more cost-effective than buying young plants from nurseries. Our trays are made from tough, recyclable polypropylene and provide in excess of 10 years of use. For even better value, browse our used and secondhand range.
Choosing the right plant trays depends on several factors, including the types of seeds you plan to start. Smaller seeds, like herbs or lettuce, require trays with shallow cells. If you’re planning on starting large seeds like trees or shrubs, deeper cells will provide ample space for root development.
Propagation trays need draining holes to allow excess water to drain away as most plants prefer well-drained soil. This prevents the soil from becoming waterlogged which can lead to root rot and other harmful fungal diseases. It also provides the roots with access to oxygen to promote healthy growth.
Most seedlings require water every day or every other day. Never let the soil dry out completely, however it shouldn’t be saturated with water. If the soil feels dry, irrigate the trays thoroughly until water pours out of the drainage holes, then stop watering.
Seeds can usually stay in the seed tray for 4-6 weeks before you need to transplant them into a larger plant pot or outside.
Successful Propagation Starts with Seed Trays
Starting seedlings successfully requires the right tools for the job. That’s where our propagation trays come in! Here’s how our strong and lightweight seed trays provide the optimal environment for young plants and contribute to healthy seedling growth…
Controlled environment
Create the perfect environment to nurture and germinate seeds by placing them indoors where temperature, humidity and light can be monitored and controlled. Our light, sturdy trays are easy to move and rearrange to optimise light exposure and maintain their shape during handling to reduce the risk of damaging young plants.
Efficient use of space
Our trays come in various sizes and configurations, allowing home gardeners to start multiple seeds in a compact area. This is particularly beneficial if you’re working with limited space, like a balcony or small greenhouse.
Easy transplanting
The structured layout of our seed trays makes it easy to handle each seedling with minimal disturbance to its roots.
Choosing high quality, durable and long-lasting seedling trays, such as our Huw Richards and Charles Dowding ranges, ensures that they will be a valuable part of your gardening toolkit for years to come.
